Watch Out for These Common Porsche 911 Problems

first hit the market in 1963 and has remained a favorite driver focused car among enthusiasts, with classic and contemporary models growing in value every day. Whether you're lucky enough to drive one now, or are in the market for a new-to-you Porsche 911, be on the lookout for the following common Porsche 911 troubles. If you encounter any signs of a problem, be sure to visit a trusted Porsche mechanic for further diagnostics.

The first generation of the 911 remained on the market until 1989 and was succeeded by the short lived second generation, which lasted until 1994. While each of those cars had a few issues themselves, we're going to focus this article on more modern versions, starting with the third gen, which was the last of the air-cooled Porsche 911s.

Third Generation Porsche 911 Troubles

Though now a major hit with collectors, the 3rd generation 911 suffered from its fair share of faults. Among the most common complaints with this car, built between model years 1995 and 1998, include oil leaks. There are various locations that oil leaks can sprout from, including the valve covers. These 911s also suffer from failed door straps, corrosion on the heat shields and silencer welds of the exhaust and problematic AC systems.

Fourth Generation Porsche 911 Trouble

Porsche introduced a water-cooled engine in the 4th gen 911, and it worked quite well when new. However, drivers of the 1999-2004 911 have run into another type of problem, a weak intermediate shaft bearing. The IMS bearing drives the camshaft, and if it fails, there will be a need for major engine repair.

Fifth Generation Porsche 911 Trouble

The fifth generation 911 could be bought new between 2005 and 2011. Though pre-2006 models did suffer similar issues with the IMS bearing, later years didn't have as many major problems. Drivers do report various oil leaks, coolant leaks and cracked coil packs though, so be sure to have any 911 carefully inspected by an expert before purchasing.

Sixth Generation Porsche 911 Trouble

Built for model years 2012 to 2019, the 6th generation 911 saw quite a lift in technology throughout its years, and major complaints have been minimal. A few problems that have been reported include a squeaky sunroof, headlamp failure and AC sensor failure. As these cars age, more common issues could become present.

The latest generation of the 911, built since 2019, has yet to yield many serious commonly reported issues.
